Australia’s communications regulator has expanded its enforcement action against illegal online gambling, instructing internet service providers to block a new group of websites found to be operating unlawfully.
Following investigations, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) determined that several online gambling services were offering access to Australian consumers in breach of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. As a result, the regulator has requested that domestic ISPs restrict access to these platforms.
The most recent blocking action applies to a dozen websites. The services identified in the latest request are Abu King, BetAlice, Dragon Slots, Nova Jackpot, Power Up Casino, QuickWin, Roby Casino, Rocketspin, Rooster Bet, Vegasino, Vegas Now, and Winbay.
Website blocking forms part of a broader enforcement framework used by the ACMA to limit access to illegal online gambling services and reduce consumer exposure to unlicensed operators. The regulator began issuing blocking requests in November 2019, and since then, a total of 1,455 illegal gambling and affiliate websites have been blocked at the ISP level.
In addition to blocking measures, regulatory pressure has led to market exits by a significant number of operators. Since the ACMA commenced enforcement of updated illegal online gambling rules in 2017, approximately 220 illegal gambling services have withdrawn from the Australian market.
