The second full quarter of regulated iGaming on a competitive market in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, has generated revenue of 267 million Canadian dollars as consumers in the province staked a combined 6.04 billion Canadian dollars on sports betting and iGaming during this period.

The revenue of 267 million dollars represents a significant increase compared to the 162 million Canadian dollars in revenue that were generated during the first quarter since the market opened in Ontario on April 4.

The total stakes of 6.04 billion Canadian dollars also represented a sharp increase compared to the 4.07 billion dollars that were staked during the first quarter, which ended on June 30. In precise numbers, the increase is 48.4 percent in the second quarter compared to the first.

The number of licensed operators in the province has also seen a noticeable increase. At the end of the first quarter there were just 18 licensed operators in Ontario, while at the end of September the number went up to 24. Moreover, the number of active websites in the business surged from 31 to 42.

In fact, several high-profile international online casino brands have received licenses to operate in Ontario during the second quarter. One such example is PokerStars, which was granted a license in July.

More Players and Bigger Average Spend

With more operators available, the number of active players accounts also saw an increase, going all the way up to 628,000 from 492,000 in the first quarter. Moreover, average spend per player reached 142 Canadian dollars in the second quarter, up from 113 Canadian dollars in the first quarter.

The launch of online betting and gaming in Ontario was made possible by a bill that became law in 2021, repealing Canada’s ban on single-event betting. From 27 August 2021, provincial lotteries were allowed to offer single-event betting, but Ontario took everything a step further by planning to allow private operators to enter the market.

Legislation for this purpose was introduced in November 2020 and then passed in 2021. In September 2021, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario published its regulatory standards for sports betting, including integrity rules and advertising standards and then the market opened on April 4, 2022.
